Ive always said ill never play a game of Battletech after the mergeing of the MWDA material simply as i did'nt like what Wizz Kids done with MWDA, they butchered what could have been a very good game if they only put some thought into it and were not so interested in just raking in the profits and only seeing £$£$£$£$£$signs.

Ive always intended createing my own slice of Battletech history should i find the need to play any games post Jihad, but thats very likely to take for ever for me to reach this dilema as im still more than happy gameing in 3025 time line and fixing my mech rusty ol mech up with gaffer tape and gum, so im personally not overly worried what happens after the Jihad / MWDA mergeing.

I would like to point out that just a few short years ago Battletech was on the very verge of becomeing a dead game, and its mainly thanks to the hard work from Fanpro that stopped this from happening so my deepest respect and appreciation goes out to them as they turned a static dieing game about and breathed life back into it and rekindle interest once more into the oldest tabletop Sci-fi wargame still going.

As for Catalyst its still early days to judge them but so far the way they have started out seems good (even to a old hard nosed Battletech player like myself) alot of the old rules needed clarification and stream lineing as the game was suffering from simply being bogged down by to many altered and corrected rules over the years of game errata's, the new TW & TM attempt to correct this with the brand new rules books that are easier to follow and understand as they are clearly laid out which in turn speeds up game play for an all round more enjoyable gameing experience...

Even if you dont like the inevitable approach of the MWDA time line merge and really dreading it, that still is no reason not to embrace and welcome these new TW & TM rules, as ive said they really do address many of the old rules and gray areas and in general make things much clearer and there no reason at all why you cant use the newer rules for your old games and campaigns as im doing now. :) zac

It took alot of fan *****ing to get them to Change the HAG rules a little. rememeber they use to be able to target a location while Pulse, UACs, and RACs couldn't?

I bet you any thing the Inferno Rules will change yet again. hell any one remember when Clan Streaks use to be able to use Inferno Rounds and then that changed as well?

Of course there are bound to be corrections within the new core rules books, even i expected that but the amount has been reasonable considering the amount of work that has had to be done before the books publication.
As ive already said i was very skeptical and even less enthusiastic when i heard about the new core rule books, but all i can really say is go to you local games store or retailer and have a browse and flick through the pages of the books and see what the rules have to offer you before you reject them and shoot them down, as ive said they are very clear, easy to understand and follow and even aids you with notes and where certain reference material can be located within the book on the topic your reading up on, what more could you ask for... :)

Sorry sbout my Icecream comment man, it was intended as tongue-in-cheek humor, and I guess it didn't come across well in text. I was honestly trying to support your decision. I think it takes a lot of integrity not to just post an anonymous torrent or something.

I've gone through TW several times to check on things that were posted or just to read up on rules or to see just how different from the BMR:R they actually are and I have to say they aren't any more different. Sort of like the difference between the RoW and the BMR:R, yes I know the Compendium is in there.

The core is pretty much the same and is unchanged but there are additions and some minor changes all for the better I think. One thing that disappointed me was the loss of the "construction rules" but considering the size of TW I am not surprised something had to be left out or the price would have been much higher.

Game play is still the same but with new weapons.

Tweaking the rules is part of any rule set. BT seems to do it much less than other rules I have seen or played or listened to the players gripe about it .....cough, coughGWcough, cough! I am grateful to WK, et al that we fans have some input into rule changes at least. Changes to make the game mechanics balanced and playable are a good thing and the people who play the game are the ones who possibly see the problems more readily.

@Zac,

Yes, maybe it was too deep but I was trying to point out that there may be any number of explanations why Devlin Stone garnered the influence he did at the time he did.

To be honest they should have left the TC/Pls, TC/RAC. TC/UAC rules alone if they was at first going to make a HAG/TC combo alowed because that there sparked a heck of alot of arguments because of how unfair that was.

so instead of alowing all multi-Fire weapons use the TC like old times they made the HAG unable to use the TC like the others.

which I find funny. because if you think about it if they did allow all those weapons to use the TC like they did in the old days they would have more or less be admiting they was Wrong and players like me right so instead of admiting that they did to the HAGs what they did to the other weapons(still in the way vindcating people like me that we was right about some of their new rules.).

It seems you are blowign the HAG thing out of proportion. I mean if you tink about it you had a brand ne weapons sysem. When they are makign a lisst of the weapons they know are burst fire and shouldnt be able to reap the rewards of TC Aimed shots they left off the HAG. They fixed it, it works liek the other burst fire style weapons, move on.

anyway, The no PL, RAC, HAG, UAC gets to use TC aimed shots makes sense to me. They still get the -1 from it so those pulses are stil at a -3 mod.

Im kind of looking forward to the 3rd and final core book now as it deals with subjects related to campaigns and large scale battles, such as off table artillery support, weather conditions and there effects in game, large scale deployment, and then there is the new 3075 TRO as ive stated elsewhere thats has quite a few BattleDroid designs in it... Oooooo i just cant wait two products on my must have list for 08. :D

Agreed, but they are human so maybe they just didn't catch it or didn't realize the implication or any number of reasons. So, it really doesn't matter because the "mistake" did not make a HUGE difference to the mechanics of the game and it was caught after further "testing". No offense, Dart, but things like this have happened before, C3 slave = TAG, and will happen again, so, it is really a minor point.

Actually DART, they don't.

It is a CONSPIRACY. 8)

They just want to make you think iit is mistakes... but really, they're planning on embarassing every player on the planet.
After we're good and frustrated, they'll announce
a new rulebook... which will be flawed; but that players will buy anyway in the hope of fixing old problems. to which we'll be frustrated agin,
and TPTB will introduce an nother new rulebook....

Do you see the vast circular issue here?

It's a conspiracy, 8) man.... they're out to get us.

I have a coffee maker in my bunker/office. It doesn't get the coffee hot enough, and besides that for some reason the entire deployment I have been unable to get a good "formula" going for making a pot of coffee.

Six months of sub-par coffee has left me in a near-vegetative state. I've been living off bad cofee and the Arabic equivalent of Red Bull.

I have to give briefings every day. Limited coffee, hocked up on energy drinks = weird briefings.

Anyway, as to the books...why, oh why did they have to make them all in paperback? Those things are going to get DESTROYED. Ok, so I'll probably never use them in a game (I haven't played BT in years, I'm just a "reader" now), but back in the day we used to throw those books around like they were frisbees. Every other turn we were flipping through those pages and passing them down the map like ravenous beings.

Lifespan will be short. Watch, though, I bet you anything they will start to release paperback versions! I wonder if they are using the hardback as an excuse to charge $40/$50 a book. Though the pages and art work are higher quality than I have seen previously, I'll give them that...

If the coffee is old then there is little you can do to make it any better. Someone said a touch of vanilla bean will help but I have never tried it.

If the coffee is relatively fresh then use a level tablespoonful for each cup you want to make, e.g. 4 level spoonfuls = 4 cups, and it should be okay. If you are making the AVA MANGO version of coffee you dump in the whole bag for 6 cups and drink quickly.

Had an officer like that back when I was in the Reserves. He gave weird briefings no matter. Probably the reason he was commanding a Reserve unit.

Us too but only with the rule books not the Star League book for darn sure. Some of the older Source books never left home either and never had to because most of the guys I played BT with had them.

Still, our TROs got major workouts, one of mine had to have the spine taped to keep the cover on. I hated doing it but it was either that or be continually searching for the cover.

From some where or other I score two TRO's bound into one book .... damn good job too. Wish I had brought that one over here.

I have briefings all day tomorrow, 0500 till 2200...long, long day. I'll give your recipe a go and see if it does any better. Thankfully I'm almost out of here. Now I just need to find myself a girl that makes good coffee and I'm SET.

For my group, I was the one with all the books. The guys had a few, mainly TROs, but me? I was the guy who was really into BT so I bought pretty much all the books. Hard thing to do on a high school kid's allowance, but I managed. Every book purchased was a victory. I still have all of 'em, hoarded away in boxes. Some are quite worse for wear, but that's ok. It's my little piece of nostalgia. I might actually dig them out when I get back, old high school chum wants to play again.

I'm anxious for...what's it called...Strategic Operations, and Interstellar Operations, to come out. We always played big, long campaigns that usually spanned several worlds. Little bit of the RPG in there, but most of the time was spent in Mechs...of course. Ah, those were the days.

Ramble on.

Dalthius,
when you get out of XYZ sandbox, let us know where you are stationed.
? what branch ?
Chances are, there is a CBT player or 2 within driving distance.
If you are close to me, I'll even bring real coffee.

Tell you what Dalthius, when you get back to the First World from the Third World, go into a gaming store. You will notice that the main books from the core lines of the major games are in HARDCOVER for the durability factor. So too is it with the Battletech core books (and remember back in the day rulesbooks used to be done in softcover too... my old BT compendium is in softcover.). It is unlikely with the advent of rulebooks on PDF that they will ever make a soft-cover version of the Core books As far as sourcebooks in softcover, they are a much smaller market number than the Core books and as such they do the soft cover to keep costs down.

And if you want to be displeased about the cost of the Core books, take a 300-page PDF to a copy shopt/Kinkos when you get back. Get an estimate for getting it printed in full color. I'll tell you right now, a black and white printout[/i] of a 300-page PDF will run you about $27.00 (9 cents a page). Throw in even the simplest of bindings and you are looking at well over $30. The Hardback sourcebooks are a) in FULL COLOR and b )Hardbound. Really, when you think about it in those terms, $40-$50 isn't out of line.

Ronin: I'm a USAF Security Forces Reservist out of Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, TX. I don't actually live in Fort Worth, I live in Austin, but I'm moving up to Fort Worth to be a full-time instructor for the Reserves. I'm sure there's plenty of BT gamers in Fort Worth, if I look hard enough. I might just get lucky and find someone who knows how to make a good pot of coffee, too...

Charlie Tango: Well said. I didn't think about what the flooding of PDFs would do to the game industry. I recall wondering, back in the day, why all of a sudden all my World of Darkness books were only available in hardcover. Makes sense. I didn't put the two together for BT, as I've never owned a hardcover BT book until the new stuff came out. Anyway, I stand corrected.

No problem... sorry for getting a little huffy. I just get tired of hearing about how expensive the books are. When you look at the costs involved, they are really on par across the publishing industry. Even a regular black and white hardcover novel costs $25-$30 these days.

You're down in Austin? I know a couple of people who are reservists out of Carswell actually. I used to live in the D/FW area but now live up in Norman. We're running a Battletech mini-convention again this fall up here. Maybe you might be able to make it....

We'll have to keep in touch. Wouldn't mind a good game, not in the least. Where's Norman? I'm not that familiar with the D/FW area. Guess I better, since I'm going to be buying a house up there.
